Timber Sale Administration
Selling timber is often a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You only get one chance to get it right. The unforeseen circumstances that often occur during the sale of timber usually make the process too overwhelming. Landowners can quickly become frustrated and regretful. For this reason, you often hear stories about landowners who wished they had never sold their timber.
A consulting forester’s job is to assume all the headaches and make selling timber a pleasurable and profitable experience.
Many of the processes involved with selling timber are everyday experiences to a forester. At George Comstock & Associates, Consulting Foresters, we also excel at marketing and bidding the timber. Often, our clients see their expectations doubled in financial terms.
These are the basic steps used to sell your timber:
Timber Theft
Timber theft issues usually arise from poorly identified property lines. When theft occurs, we can often establish exactly what the logger received for your timber by tracing where your logs were sold or manufactured, and we can also arbitrate a settlement without going to court. Our ability to do this stems from the many personal relationships we have with local lumber and logging companies. If arbitration is not successful, we have relationships with certain attorneys who have experience with timber theft.
Often, tracing stolen timber is more difficult than described above, especially if the logging company is uncooperative. In this case, we follow standard protocol for assessing theft by measuring stump diameters and the distances from the stump to the treetop in order to determine tree volumes.
Timber Valuation
Sometimes landowners want to know, “What's my timber worth?” For this reason, we offer a timber valuation service. The following are several good reasons to order an appraisal:
For whatever reason an appraisal is ordered, you can be sure that accuracy is important. Accuracy can only be attained by a competent forester with experience in timber valuation.
We use a check-and-balance system to increase the accuracy of our appraisals. Since 1989, actual timber values have been part of our day-to-day language. Rest assured, we know timber.
Boundary Lines
The best way to defend your property from theft and trespassers is to clearly identify your property lines. Since savvy landowners no longer want livestock ruining their valuable timber, livestock fence and wire is rarely used for property-line identification. Fencing is expensive, ugly and can be dangerous to people and wildlife.
Today, industrial-grade boundary-marking paint is applied to “boundary trees” that cheaply and safely identify your property lines. Stray hunters or confused loggers working on an adjacent property can now clearly demarcate where your property begins.
Only boundary marking paint can last up to 10 years. Common paint should not be expected to last for more than a couple years. Protect your property by properly marking boundaries with cheap and safe boundary-marking paint.
Management Plans
Our forest management plans are written to meet the landowners’ goals and also to meet state and federal requirements. Management plans are needed to apply for cost / share money to fund timber-stand improvements such as crop-tree release and grapevine control.
